Songco, Jeffrey Augustine
My multidisciplinary artwork explores the complexity of self-portraiture. My installations reveal moments from my autobiography and multiple personas by incorporating self-portrait photographs, videos, and sculptures. My self-portraits do not need to include a representation of my face (though it often does), but it should at least represent a part of my body or an effect from an action produced by my body. As a gay American man of Filipino ethnicity, my artwork is a place of representation — an opportunity to playfully cast myself as the protagonist of a postcolonial queer narrative. With a growing archive of “me’s”, I’ve quite literally objectified myself as a material for art making.
